About

Self Portrait 20092010 marks FIFTY years since I picked up my first camera (probably that of my Scoutmaster, Ross V. Smith). I was hooked by the magic of the darkroom, turning blank paper into photographs… magic indeed! Today I’m all digital but it’s still magic, and still fun; only the science is different. Disposing of my darkroom has been a traumatic experience. I treasured the solitude of the darkroom almost as much as the solitude of a quiet misty morning in the Northern Ontario forest where I could roam, compose and create my own interpretation of the world about me.

Fine Art photography is my passion, but it is also my teacher and my inspiration for the other subjects that come before my lens, be they brides, babies or Boomers. I bring the lessons of composition, lighting and mood from the forest to the church. The lessons have sometimes been hard won, and almost never won alone. I have had many mentors over the years, many as photographers, some from other artistic persuasions, and some who were not connected to the arts in any active way, but were real encouragers, my cheerleaders. I have valued each one, for each one has brought something unique to our shared learning experience. As I enter into my “senior” years, I now try to give back some of what was given to me and perhaps add a little of my own wisdom to the care and feeding of the next generation of photographic artists. It is my hope that they will walk more beside me than follow behind me. Someday I may need to lean on them. Learning to see is a lifelong educational process and one that I intend to pursue so long as I have a sound mind and a willing body.
